PLAYERS OF THE WEEK - WEEK 8

JAZZY CRESPO - 5G

Jazzy has made incredible strides in the last few weeks. Already a talented player, she has learned to play the game more patiently and it has paid off BIG TIME! Crespo was dynamite in an overtime win vs Manchester on Saturday and equally strong in a heartbreaking 2-point loss to rival Colchester on Sunday. On the weekend, the speedy guard had 8 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, and 5 steals. Jazzy is undeniable as our 5G Player of the Week.

HONORABLE MENTION:

SYDNEY REPKO

Sydney is becoming a bigger offensive threat each week. Her hustle and attention to game plan is also impeccable. On the defensive side of the ball, Repko was an aggressive difference maker for the Wolverines in this weekends action.  Sydney finished the weekend with 6 points, 6 rebounds, 1 assist, and 3 steals. For her efforts, Sydney is our Honorable Mention of the Week.

LILIANA MICHALSKI- 6G

Liliana was everywhere for her team on Sunday vs. a stout North Haven team. She was a menace on the backboards rebounding and on defense nearly bringing her squad all the way back in the second half after a rocky start. Michalski had 5 points, 8 rebounds, 2 assists, 5 steals in the 18 -33 loss. For her inspired efforts, Liliana  is our Player of the Week.

HONORABLE MENTION:

CAROLINE MURPHY

Caroline showed her sharp-shooting touch on Sunday while playing some of her best defense of the season. Murphy was on fire from the short corner with 4 points, 5 rebounds, and 2 steals. The quick decision making and smart shot selection earns Caroline our Honorable Mention of the Week.

SAMIR ZAIM-SASSI -6B

Samir Zaim-Sassi played one of his best two game stretches of the season this weekend. In games against East Hampton and Marlborough, the wing exploded for 27 points, 16 rebounds, 5 assists, 6 steals, and 2 blocks. "SZS", as his coach calls him, brought energy on both sides of the floor leading to a 1-1 record for the 6B Wolverines. This performance earns Samir our Player of the Week.

HONORABLE MENTION:

MAXWELL MATUSKEY

Maxwell Matuskey enjoyed a strong weekend of play. His ability to manage against the press and his willingness to knock down the open shot kept the Wolverines offense running smoothly. The point-guard scored 15 points, grabbed 7 rebounds, dished 6 assists, and added 3 steals to capture the Honorable Mention of the Week.

CHRIS HOLMAN - 6/7B

Chris's hard work and effort was notable and called out by his coaches. In 1 game of action this past week, he scored 5 points, added 5 rebounds. The center/forward has shown continued improvement and provides depth for the 6/7 squad as they head into the second half of the season. For his efforts, Holman is our Player of the Week.

HONORABLE MENTION:

THOMAS CHESERY

Thomas has become a reliable shooter from the wing position. His coach also noted his hustle and grit helping with rebounding efforts. Chesery had 5 points and 7 rebounds against Milford. For his efforts, Thomas is our Honorable Mention of the Week.

JACK CORSO, MAX WHITE, & MATTHEW FILIPOWICZ - 7B

The guard play for the 7th grade team this weekend had Coach John Howlett feeling proud. The team went 2-0 with wins against Ledyard and Groton.  Howlett asked his guards to look to score and score they did. Jack Corso led the way with 29 points, 8 rebounds, 10 assists, 8 steals, and 1 block in two games. Max White added 23 points and 4 rebounds. Matthew Filipowicz tallied 6 points, 9 rebounds, 1 assist, and 1 steal.  This trio did more than enough to earn our Co-Players of the Week.

THE TEAM

Team Members:

Mason Mejias, Jaime Hine, Drew Kofsuske, Conner Woolard, JJ Warrick, Owen Harris, Logan LaPia, CJ Callahan, Gage Oxford, Jorge Olmo.

----------------------------------------

North Haven rolled into town as an undefeated, 1st place team in the CT Basketball Conference. They also happened to be one of only two teams to defeat the Wolverines (56-46),  who came into the game with 13 wins and 2 losses.

The outcome would shake up the standings at the top of the league. The big game lived up to the billing. The contest was intensely competitive with multiple lead changes and a score never separated by more than 5 points. North Haven led by 4 at the half and Wallingford led by 2 to start the fourth quarter.

With 18 seconds left to play, the Wolverines clung to a 1-point lead and North Haven inbounding the ball. The border rivals worked the ball inside for a basket with 0:05 on the clock - North Haven - 50, Wallingford - 49.  After a Wolverines timeout, the inbounds pass was deflected at half court and advanced the ball with 0:03 left.

What unfolded was perfect execution by the team. Gage Oxford inbounded the ball to JJ Warrick, who had curled around a screen from CJ Callahan. Warrick rose to launch his jumpshot and as the clock hit zero, his attempt moved towards the rim... just missing.  The officials whistle blew signaling a shooting foul for the Wolverines. Warrick , who is an 85% free throw shooter, sank both and sunk North Haven in the process. For this collectively excellent effort, our 8th grade team are ALL the Players of the Week.

HONORABLE MENTION:

OUR HOME CROWD

Sunday was a fun day. The Wolverines crowd was on hand to support us and celebrate a fantastic win. The energy was a big factor in our comeback. It was also notable how sportsmanship and respect for our opponent were front and center. Both teams played admirably and, for their enthusiastic support, our home corwd earns the nod for Honorable Mention this Week.
