----------------------------------------
North Haven rolled into town as an undefeated, 1st place team in the CT Basketball Conference. They also happened to be one of only two teams to defeat the Wolverines (56-46), who came into the game with 13 wins and 2 losses.
The outcome would shake up the standings at the top of the league. The big game lived up to the billing. The contest was intensely competitive with multiple lead changes and a score never separated by more than 5 points. North Haven led by 4 at the half and Wallingford led by 2 to start the fourth quarter.
With 18 seconds left to play, the Wolverines clung to a 1-point lead and North Haven inbounding the ball. The border rivals worked the ball inside for a basket with 0:05 on the clock - North Haven - 50, Wallingford - 49. After a Wolverines timeout, the inbounds pass was deflected at half court and advanced the ball with 0:03 left.
What unfolded was perfect execution by the team. Gage Oxford inbounded the ball to JJ Warrick, who had curled around a screen from CJ Callahan. Warrick rose to launch his jumpshot and as the clock hit zero, his attempt moved towards the rim... just missing. The officials whistle blew signaling a shooting foul for the Wolverines. Warrick , who is an 85% free throw shooter, sank both and sunk North Haven in the process. For this collectively excellent effort, our 8th grade team are ALL the Players of the Week.
